Urban Leaders in Training is a service leadership program geared for individuals who want to serve others and make an impact while growing and developing as a leader. Each member is placed at a non-profit, church or government organization within Tacoma to work directly alongside vulnerable populations and those who have been marginalized throughout the City.

The Urban Leaders in Training team takes part in leadership development, service projects, team events and much more. Their year is filled with service, leadership development, and teamwork development. ULT works in conjunction with AmeriCorps allowing members to receive a monthly living stipend, health care and an educational award (of $5,500) at the end of the 10.5 month commitment.

Last year we provided training and equipped 25 members through our Urban Leaders in Training program who then recruited 1400 volunteers to serve 3,726 youth throughout the city. Of the 25 young adults on our 2012 team, 48% began full time jobs after completion, 32% went on to Graduate School and 20% returned for a second year with ULT.

  • ULT/Americorps members are entitled to an education award of $5,730 that can be spent on college tuition or student loans. This award is recieved upon completion of the members services term.
  • Members will also receive a monthly living stipend that is estimated at $1,150 per month.
  • In addition to the education award and living allowance members will also gain experience and access to leadership training, and help with navigating the city.

Your support of Urban Leaders in Training is far more than checkbook philanthropy. It helps Urban Leaders in Training members put their idealism to work by tutoring and mentoring school children, improving literacy performance, organizing after-school programs, and environmental conservation throughout Tacoma and Pierce County. Please review our Sponsorship Packet for detailed information for a sponsorship level that best fits your company.

ULT recognizes the need for partnership in renewing our city and that the spiritual and social lives of Tacomans are not mutually exclusive. Our team members are placed at both faith based and community organizations to ensure that all voices are heard and perspectives valued. This past year we had 25 members serving at 14 different.
