GREEN THUMBS

Eastside Green Thumbs began as a 7-week summer program for elementary, middle and high school students in 2011. Since 2013 EGT has partnered with teachers and their classrooms to teach academics through garden experiences. EGT wishes to work among people of all ages with an interest in food and the environment living on Tacoma’s Eastside.

VALUES & VISION

SCHOOL GARDENING

Sustainable Roots is partners with Roosevelt Elementary School in Tacoma, working together to use the Roosevelt garden for both in-class lessons and an after school program developed to foster environmental stewardship in students.

HOME GARDEN PROJECT

We are currently running our new pilot program – EGT Home Garden Project – in Tacoma’s Dometop neighborhood. With the City of Tacoma’s Healthy Homes, Healthy Neighborhoods initiative, we are kicking off our plan to add as many home gardens as people want in Tacoma! Following our work in Dometop this spring, we will improve this service and offer it to as many people as we can responsibly.
The idea for this program is adopted from GRuB‘s Kitchen Garden Project in Olympia, WA. Check them out!

PUYALLUP WATERSHED INITIATIVE

Sustainable Roots is working with many other local organizations in the Russell Family Foundation‘s Puyallup Watershed Initiative. We are a part of the Environmental Education Community of Interest (COI) and the Just & Healthy Food System COI. We are still in year 1 of this 10-year initiative and we are poised to make a big splash with this effort from our communities!

OUR STORY

In the summer of 2011 Sustainable Roots joined the NLF team under the direction of Monty Smith. It started off as a small summer program out of the Roosevelt Garden for students in the area. This program has continued its success into the 2013 version, which included 15 campers, ages 8-14, a team of college interns and a bunch of community specialists. Following a request from the campers to continue similar work throughout the school year, we established a relationship with the administration and some awesome teachers at Roosevelt and developed an in-school program to address that. These school-related programs are now the heart of our foundational initiative called Eastside Greenthumbs.
